Eye Love Soccer

My son, equal parts ham, sports nut, cutey-pie, sweetheart, boy, and all kinds of wonderfulness.

I bought a cheapy shoot-through umbrella and stand to play with. This was the "take it out of the bag and use it" shot. J was a good sport, even if he is making a "mean" face.

SB600 fired wirelessly through 33" shoot through umbrella, camera right, about eye-high.

Seed Bed

More of the sunflowers in the sun. I was playing around with fill flash, umbrella, and bounce, too, to try and portray this in the best light.

Face Toward the Sun

I was a good boy...I bought my wife flowers the other day. Her favorite color is yellow, and I saw the sunflowers at the store and thought of her. It didn't hurt that they would be a great photo subject, either. :)

I put the vase on a bench in front of the window. This shot has the flower facing the window, camera perpendicular to the right. The backdrop is black foam core board, a little washed out by the light.

Bibby Free Hands One

Atlanta Hawks guard Mike Bibby takes a one-handed shot from the foul line during the game with the Celtics last weekend. Doesn't he realize how hard I'm trying to get my son to use 2 hands on each shot!

Al Horford -- and I -- Get the Jump Ball

I was lucky enough to be chosen by my son to accompany him to the Hawks/Celtics game last week. J got 2 tickets as a birthday present. He loves the players on the Celtics, but tonight we were rooting for the Hawks to make it into the playoffs (they didn't do it this game, but did get in yesterday). That is Al Horford winning the jump ball (I didn't know they still did that, actually) over Glen Davis of the Celtics.

This shot is an extremely lucky one. As some of you know, arenas like this have strobes mounted throughout to allow the "official" photographers to get the light they need when shooting. I kept noticing those lights flashing, just a split second before or after my shot. Well, turns out that on THIS shot, my timing was perfectly lucky. My shutter clicked at the exact moment the "house strobes" fired, giving me an excellent exposure. I was shooting aperture priority at 1600 ISO using my 70-300mm zoom lens. Makes me want to figure out how to hack in to be able to use these strobes!

Amicalola Falls

Shot from the mid-way observation point below the falls. I'm only "meh" on this shot...lacks drama or something. Let me know what it needs, please!

Additional Parking In Rear

Hiking through Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia, this truck was "parked" in the trees. I'm guessing it's left over from some insurance 'claim' from years ago...but gave some good rust to shoot.

Buzz Lightyear Takes Off

Actually, it's traffic on Peachtree Street. I like the jumps in the light path caused by pot holes and bumps in the road.

Pulling the Goalie

Shot during intermission lat night at the Thrashers' game. I like how the light circles and shadows and reflections came out. The girl in the short shorts is just a bonus!

Dippity Doo

We went to the Thrashers hockey game last night, last game of the season. We had a good time, but the photography was tough from the upper deck. I might post some of the shots. This guy, though, was a few rows in front of us and silhouetted nicely by the ice. I probably blew off 10 shots of him, getting his head turned in different directions. Silly, huh?

Left Eye

My daughter has an assignment at school. She has to shoot 24 different types of photos (like, "looking up", "silhouette", and so on) and they have to be b/w FILM. They will process the film themselves. She and I went out last weekend and practiced, using my old Nikon FG, circa 1981 (high school graduation present). She used my D70 to practice until she was comfortable she wouldn't be wasting the film. She got into it, but it's going to be several weeks before she sees the negs/prints, so the reinforcement of composition/exposure will be lost.

I never realized she was a left eyed shooter before. She says she goes back and forth, using both eyes. I need to practice that!

Red Wood

The mill building at Rex Mill is old and in disrepair, which makes it great for close up shots like this one! 50mm prime lens, f/2.2 yummy dof. My favorite part is the wood grain showing below the peeling paint.

Really needs to be Viewed Big On Black.

Pure Grain

This is part of an old advertisement on the side of a mill building. The waterfall is still there, and the water wheel for turning the mill, but everything is diliapidated and not working.
We spent a couple hours shooting there last weekend, and my daughter was using the old Nikon FG film camera. Of course, she shot about 75 frames of digital trying to figure out what she wanted to shoot with the film! i'm excited to see what she got, but it will be a while before she gets the negs back (school project).
