Just Around The River Bend

Taken from a covered bridge over the Swift River near North Conway, New Hampshire. I hope y'all aren't getting too tired of my shots from NH....I've only selected a few of the 1500 shots we took! © 2006 Mexipickle  Posted by Picasa

Gotta Love Me!

My children. J is 6, A is 13. It amazes me to see how much they love each other, but they do. Even though he teases her until she gets so mad she can't stand it.....even though she doesn't want to hang out with a little boy all the time....he looks up to her, and she thinks he is wonderful.

What a blessed life I have.

Federal Transgression

Last night was my first ever photostroll with the Atlanta Flickr folks. Thanks for welcoming me and A. We had a blast and hope to join again. It was fun putting faces and names with nicknames. I'm really not used to introducing myself as "Mexipickle"...I'll have to get used to that!

Thanks again. I'm looking forward to seeing the shots everyone got.

This shot is of the Altanta Federal Reserve Bank. We attacked it with about 10 photographers, which drove security crazy. They ran us off pretty quickly.  Posted by Picasa

Yellow Flowers

I am perhaps the world's worst at knowing what flowers and trees are called, other than "flower" or "tree"! I have no clue what kind of flowers these are, but I like them. If you know, let me know...maybe I'll learn something!

"Pet Pig"

PennyThis is Penny. She's not really a pig, she's a dog. But, she's a pig about being petted! If you're in the same world and outdoors, she expects your hand to be on her! If it's not, she'll move her forehead so that it's under your hand, then move back and forth, making you pet her...honest! She was given to us a couple of years ago when she was just a little puppy. We took her in instead of letting the "owner" destroy her.
I took this shot with a rented 12-24 mm lens, rented from Ziplens. Bob was nice enough to post it to Dogsbreath.org. Thanks, Bob!

Rock...Steady

Another from on top of Mt. Washington, NH. This is the view out the window from the cabin built decades ago to shelter visitors to the summit. The wind was about 60 mph and about 11 deg. F wind chill, though it was about 65 at the bottom of the mountain. © 2006 Mexipickle Posted by Picasa

Hamburger Mountain

Echo Lake State Park and White Horse Ledge is what this is really called. When my kids saw the photo and the reflection, they said it looked like a hamburger. If you see the ledge as the top of the bun, and the reflection of the ledge as the bottom of the bun, you might start to understand their take on this. Cracked me up, but I had to admit they had a point!

Sabbaday Falls

This is one of three water falls at Sabbaday Falls, which is along the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire.

Sabbaday Falls gets its name from a crew that was working in the area in the 1800s. The stopped work for the winter on Saturday, hid their tools for the winter, and decided to knock off on Sunday (Sabbath Day...Sabbaday). They never went back, but the name stuck. There are two more falls downstream from this one. I'll post a shot of it coming up.

Rock Horse Ledge

More from New Hampshire. This is Echo Lake State Park, near North Conway. If you see the white blip at about 2:00, that's a hotel. We hiked up there and back (the photo of the flower posted just before this shot was taken at that hotel). © Mexipickle 2006

"Stop, that tickles!"

Two ferns growing on the forest floor, near Robert Frost's old place in Franconia, NH. It is a great, peaceful, meaningful place with a lovely path through the woods, even a path less taken. Visit if you get a chance...The Frost Place

I'm not sure which I like better--color or black and white. Let me know what you think. My daughter likes B/W best.

Cog Railroad

More from Mt. Washington, NH. This was at the top, where it was 30 F, with a wind chill of 11 degrees, wind gusting to 60 miles/hour. We came up a few feet short of the summit as my wife couldn't stand up in the wind.

This is the Cog Railway track. The Cog Railway uses cogs instead of traditional train wheels. Though we didn't ride it, I'm guessing the cogs get better traction as the train climbs from 1500 feet to 6300 feet. The ice is rime ice, formed by the strong winds blowing the cloud vapor and causing it to freeze.

If you look to the back of the frame, you'll see the weather station house, chained down against the winds. Mt. Washington has recorded the highest winds on earth, 234 mph, and experiences hurricane force winds (over 75 MPH) something like 100 days a year!

Go visit...you'll really enjoy it!

Saco Dawn

During our recent vacation, we stayed near Barltett, New Hampshire. I walked out my back door and down a path and found the Saco River. This was our first morning there and was a perfect keynote for our week's vacation. I'll be boring you with tons of Autumn photos and waterfall photos in the coming days!

Responsibility

My wife and I took a week away from the kids and went to Boston and New Hampshire. We started our week touring Boston, including the Holocaust Memorial there. It is a powerful place, with etched glass listing the numbers of all the people who were held in the camps. At each pillar was a quote from a survivor, relative, or liberator of the camps. This quote struck me especially hard, and shows the ultimate responsibility the prisoners felt for and to each other. Perhaps there's a better word than responsiblity---dedication, love, commitment---but I can't think of it now. I'm open to suggestions.

If you get a chance, visit the memorial in Boston. It is powerful.

I'll be posting more shots of our trip, all lighter than this and full of fall color, but this is how our trip started, so I thought I would start with this.
